Management of Patients with Neurological Disorders
Course Description
This course is designed to incorporate evidence based practice and utilization of previous tDPT coursework for the management of patients with neuromuscular disorders. Lectures and patient cases are presented to aid the learner in facilitating clinical decision making and implementing evidence based practice in contemporary, professional clinical practice for persons with neurological disorders.
Objectives
Upon successful completion of the course, the participant will:
- Critically evaluate primary sources of evidence on functional outcomes and assessments for patients with neurological disorders as applied to clinical case examples.
- Distinguish test properties related to outcome measures used for persons with neurological impairments in research reports.
- Critically evaluate systematic reviews and meta-analyses as sources of clinical evidence on therapeutic interventions for persons with neurological health conditions.
- Integrate information obtained from intervention studies into the management of individual patients.
- Articulate theories of neuroplasticity following lesions to the nervous system with implications for therapeutic interventions.
- Describe current models of motor learning and motor control; demonstrate integration of these principles to intervention strategies for individuals with neurological health conditions.
- Distinguish current models/theories of normal and neuro-pathological balance and gait function.
- Distinguish the implications of current model information for the evaluation of and interventions for gait impairments and functional limitations.
- Articulate the emerging role of technology in neurorehabilitation.
- Articulate the interaction of cognition as it relates to mobility and discuss how this interaction may impact physical therapy care.
- Articulate the implications of the World Health Organization International Classification of Function and Disability (ICF) model for management of individuals with neurological conditions.
